Everything else
City Council
- At its February 14 meeting the council approved a memorandum of understanding with Lime for bikes and scooters in the city, a rezone at 3176 W. 1700 S. from A-1 Agricultural to General Commercial, and an interlocal agreement for the North Davis Metro SWAT Team.
- The council also awarded the Marilyn Acres Phase 6 utility contract to Leon Poulsen company, awarded the Fire Station 32 design contract to Galloway, amended the code on non-gravity sewer systems, and adopted a new city communications policy. Agendas are at syracuseut.gov/AgendaCenter and you can subscribe at syracuseut.gov/list.aspx.
From the mayor
- The mayor writes that growing the city’s business base spreads the tax burden and helps keep residential taxes down, and that he spends time recruiting businesses to Syracuse.
- Starting in February the city began offering every applicant for a location-based business license a free Business Launch Service: an optional ribbon cutting, chamber of commerce introductions, a one-time welcome article in the city magazine, and social media announcements.
Growth and projects
- The city’s first temple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is going up on the Historic Briggs Farm, a designated Century Farm: 12.27 acres, 88,886 square feet, a 319 foot spire visible from I-15, two baptistries, four instruction rooms, and four sealing rooms, with completion estimated mid to late 2024.
Public Works
- Public Works asks residents to sweep curbs and gutters and put leaves, dirt, and debris in the garbage can, and to keep storm drain grates clear so runoff to the Great Salt Lake stays cleaner.
- Apply lawn fertilizer sparingly and keep it out of the street and gutter; sweep up any excess and dispose of it properly.
- The Public Works facility accepts excess road salt for disposal. Call 801-825-7235, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Report anyone who is not a city employee using a fire hydrant to 801-825-7235, or 801-643-5775 after hours.
Parks and Recreation
- Baseball and softball leagues run from T-Ball for pre-K through junior high baseball and softball; details and registration at syracuseut.gov.
- Adult fitness classes at the Community Center, first class free: Step It Up Monday and Friday at 9 a.m. and Pump It Up Tuesday at 9 a.m. ($3 drop in, $20 for ten), High Fitness Wednesday at 9 a.m. ($5 drop in, $30 for ten).
- Senior Citizen Yoga runs Tuesday and Thursday at 8 a.m., $1 for ages 50 and up and 50 cents for 60 and up, free with a Community Center membership. Pickleball is Tuesday and Thursday, 9 a.m. to noon.
Preparedness
- This year’s exercise focuses on the Rapid Disaster Assessment Program, in which resident volunteers check their own families first, then report to a neighborhood station, pair up, canvas 8 to 10 homes, record injuries and damage, and mark doors with green, yellow, or red ribbon for first responders. No training or special skills are required, and volunteers never provide medical care or fight fires.
- The Disaster Preparedness Committee will count how many residents read about the program or watch a video on it during the week starting 6 a.m. April 15.
Police
- The Employee Spotlight features the police department’s two K9s, both German Shepherds trained in narcotics detection and handler protection and handled by Sergeant Handy and Officer Mauhar. The teams train at least four hours a week and must recertify every year.
Arts Council
- The Arts Council still needs a set designer, costumer, and sound tech for the summer musical, a camp director and volunteers for the Junior Theatre Summer Bootcamp in June, and brass players for its jazz band, which practices Tuesday nights. Email [email protected].
City services
- Passport applications are processed at City Hall by appointment only between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.; call 801-825-1477. Forms, photos, and payment by check or money order to the U.S. Department of State must be done before 4 p.m. for same day acceptance.
- Report road, street light, sign, park, water, garbage, and code concerns through the Report a Concern icon on syracuseut.gov. Job openings are under Government, Employment Opportunities.
- The Syracuse library at 1875 S. 2000 W. is open Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. All library events are free.
Community
- The SHARP student survey returns this spring for grades 6 through 12. It takes about 45 minutes online, is voluntary at every level, requires parent consent, and is anonymous; the regional coalition uses the data for prevention planning and funding.
- Syracuse High has thirteen Sterling Scholars this year. Applicants are judged on academics, work in their chosen category, community involvement, and leadership, and the school adds a $100 prize, graduation recognition, and a yearbook feature. The program is sponsored by Deseret News and started in 1962.
- Two Syracuse High students are featured as Students of the Month, each receiving $25.
- A local history feature traces a longtime Syracuse family that developed parts of the city, including ground around the original RC Willey store and the Allison Acres subdivision, and bred and raced horses here for years.
- The magazine’s monthly guessing jar contest is open; guesses go to the publisher’s email address listed on the page.
- The Clearfield Community Concert Band is welcoming new members, rehearsing Tuesdays 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Clearfield Community Art Center.
- Pages 18 through 29 are the publisher’s 2022 Readers’ Favorite business poll results, not a city feature. The school sports and activity calendars for Syracuse High, both junior highs, and Syracuse Arts Academy are on page 14.
