Connection Magazine: September 2023

In short

Watering drops to two days per week starting Labor Day, September 4, and secondary water is turned off October 1. Four candidates are running for three City Council seats, so there is no primary this year; the General Election is November 21 and the voter registration deadline is November 10. Jr. Jazz basketball registration for the first session ends September 24, and the city is looking for volunteers to carve more than 1,000 pumpkins in October. A new 24/7 emergency center breaks ground this month at Highway 193 and 2000 West.

Election details Sources: Page 7

  • Four candidates filed for three Council seats: Drake Mailes, Paul Watson, Julie Robertson, and Brett D. Cragun. Because there are not twice as many candidates as seats, there is no primary and all four advance to the General Election.
  • The election is by mail. Registered voters get a ballot 21 days before Election Day and can return it by mail or at a drop location at City Hall. You must have lived in Syracuse at least 30 days to vote.
  • Questions go to City Recorder Cassie Brown, 801-614-9633, [email protected]. Information is at SyracuseUT.com/elections and the Davis County elections page.

  • Watering days are set by quadrant, split by Antelope Drive and 2000 West: northwest Tuesday, northeast Wednesday, southwest Thursday, southeast Friday. No watering between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., and none on Sunday. Fines may be issued.
  • Public Works asks residents to shorten sprinkler run times, turn systems off during and after rain, and repair known leaks.
  • Fall is a good time to trim trees along roads and sidewalks. The clearance rule is 7 feet above the sidewalk and 11 feet above the street.

Mayor’s message Sources: Page 3

  • Mayor Dave Maughan writes about Constitution Day, September 17, the anniversary of the signing in 1787, and lists five ways he sees the Constitution shaping city government: the split between the Council’s legislative role and the mayor’s executive role, limits on local laws such as free speech and assembly protections, room for cities to set their own zoning and ordinances, the foundation of property rights, and the Fifth Amendment basis for eminent domain and due process.
