Everything else
The magazine goes digital
- The mayor writes that at the end of April the publisher of the Syracuse Connection told the city it could no longer publish the magazine, and that the reason is financial: the magazine was funded mostly by advertising, and businesses are shifting from print to online ads, where results can be tracked.
- The mayor writes that printing costs have risen sharply in the past year and that the city has already begun moving the magazine to an online format on the city website, which can carry links, video, and audio and is not limited by page count. Print “will be missed and may still happen on occasion.” Signed Mayor Dave Maughan.
- Residents can subscribe to be notified when each new issue is released.
City Council, May 14, 2024
- The council was recognized by the State of Utah as a Utah Patriot Partner.
- The council confirmed the Connection Magazine will no longer be published, and that in June residents will have access to a digital newsletter and be mailed a newsletter in the utility bill.
- Shawn Gilbert was appointed to the Syracuse City Architectural Review Committee.
- The council accepted the 2024-2025 fiscal year tentative budget, with final adoption set for June 11, 2024.
- Ordinance 24-12, section 10.35.040, was amended to match Utah Department of Health and Human Services child care licensing, allowing one employee to care for two additional school-aged children, ages five to twelve.
- Ordinance 24-13, Title Four, Chapter Six, was amended to prohibit tampering with streetlights.
- The council awarded the contract for the 2024 Road Improvement Project, which will repair roads throughout the city. Meeting information is on the City Council agenda page and the city YouTube channel.
Water and sewer
- Secondary water: the city asks residents to water outdoor landscapes about three times a week and to avoid watering on Sunday and on the designated blackout day for their area. All indoor and outdoor water comes from the same watershed.
- Sump pumps must drain into the yard away from the house, and connecting a sump pump to the sewer is prohibited. The preferred method is a bubbler in the park strip so excess water reaches the storm drain.
- Pool and spa chemicals should be stored to prevent leaks, preferably covered and away from children and pets. The city asks residents to avoid copper based algaecides, drain only when chlorine is undetectable by a test kit, and reuse water for landscaping where possible without draining onto neighboring property. Storm drain water is not treated.
- Flushable wipes are a common cause of sewer backups because they do not break down like toilet paper. The city asks residents to put wipes in the trash.
- Each summer the Fire Department flushes and checks fire hydrants, which can discolor water and temporarily lower pressure in the area. The discoloration is not harmful and clears after running the water a few minutes. Questions: Fire Department, 801-614-9614.
Roads
- 3000 West is closed between 2700 South and 3000 South for a sewer rehabilitation project.
- 1000 West is being reconstructed between 2075 South and 2700 South, continuing until about mid-October. Several other roads will be re-paved this summer after heavy construction traffic. See the construction traffic impacts map or subscribe to the Public Works list.
