In short
This month’s column is the mayor’s thank-you to paramedics. Mayor Dave Maughan writes that he believes in miracles, and that paramedics are often how those miracles happen, through training, preparation, and being on call. He thanks them in advance, before any emergency of his own, because he does not expect to be focused enough to thank them in the moment. The column reports no meetings, deadlines, or projects.
Everything else
- The mayor writes that most people know someone who has gotten the call that a loved one is being transported to a medical facility, and that in an emergency the information a family first gets may be fluid, incomplete, or more than the caller is allowed to share.
- He asks when the real miracle happens: the day of the accident, the day someone stocked the response vehicle, the day a specific technique was taught in training, the day of graduation, or the day someone decided to become a paramedic.
- The mayor describes paramedic work as a selfless task that carries risk, challenge, and trials that many people will never understand, including time away from families to be on call.
- He closes by thanking paramedics for the trust he already places in them, writing “Thank You for all you do! I may not be able to say it then.”
