Public Works Update, October 2024: Secondary Shut Off, Cross Connections, Utility Lids

In short

Secondary water was shut off October 1, 2024, so sprinkler systems should be drained and winterized before freezing temperatures. Public Works warns that improper connections between culinary and secondary water lines carry a fine of $1,000 per incident. The city also asks residents to keep landscaping trimmed back from utility lids and to store chemicals and fuel so they do not reach storm drains. The last two road projects, 1000 West and Bluff Road, are set to finish by the end of October.

Everything else

  • Cross connections. Do not link culinary water with sprinkler systems. An unprotected garden hose sitting in a puddle or an unprotected lawn sprinkler after fertilizing also counts as a cross connection. A cross connection found between culinary and secondary lines can bring a fine of $1,000 per incident. See City Code 4.15.450, or call Public Works for more information. Sources: Page 1
  • Utility lids. Keep lawn and plants trimmed back so utility lids stay visible. Crews need to find them quickly in emergencies, such as shutting off a valve. Sources: Page 2
  • Storing and disposing of materials. Keep cleaners, pesticides, fuel, oil, fertilizer, paint, and salt covered, closed when not in use, stored off the ground, and clearly labeled so they do not reach storm drains. Household hazardous waste and electronic waste can be taken to the Wasatch Integrated Waste facility. Sources: Page 2
