In short
Mayor Dave Maughan pauses his series on where tax dollars go to write about giving in Syracuse. The city opens the holiday season with a Christmas Concert on December 2, with Santa and the Grinch, free milk and cookies, and a canned food drive. The column also points to the city employee toy drive at City Hall, the fire department’s giving tree, and the Blessing Box at the police station.
Dates and deadlines
- December 2 Christmas Concert by the Syracuse City Arts Council Symphony Orchestra and Jazz Band. Children can meet and take photos with Santa and the Grinch and do activities before the concert, and milk and cookies are free to the public afterward. The city asks patrons to bring canned food to donate.
Everything else
- City employees run a toy drive at City Hall each year, working with local schools to identify which children need gifts. City recorders also give through the Davis Weber Morgan Recorders Association Sub-for-Santa.
- The Syracuse City Fire Department hosts a giving tree through OWCAP that the mayor writes helps provide Christmas for 2,000 local children each year.
- The city established a Blessing Box in front of the Syracuse Police Station for food assistance. It is community operated: residents stock it and anyone in need can take from it.
- The mayor writes that groups have visited assisted living centers with treats and companionship, and that other groups have supported local animals through adoption events.
- The mayor’s series of messages on where tax dollars are spent will continue in the new year.
- The mayor thanks city employees, volunteers, and residents who give to others during the holidays.
