Public Works Update, December 2024: Prevent Frozen Pipes, Snow Removal

In short

Public Works lists steps to keep pipes from freezing during cold snaps: insulate exposed pipes, disconnect outdoor hoses, let a faucet drip overnight, and open cabinet doors under sinks. The same update covers snow removal rules. Do not park in the street during snow removal, do not push snow from your driveway or walks into the road, and clear snow and ice from your sidewalk within 24 hours after a storm ends. Violations carry a fine.

Everything else

Frozen pipes

  • Common causes of frozen pipes are quick temperature drops, thermostats set too low, and poor insulation.
  • Insulate pipes in crawl spaces and the attic, since exposed pipes freeze more easily.
  • Before winter, disconnect garden hoses and, if you have an indoor valve, shut off and drain the pipes leading to outside faucets.
  • On cold nights, let warm water drip from a faucet on an outside wall. A trickle may be enough to keep the pipe from freezing.
  • Open cabinet doors so heat reaches un-insulated pipes under sinks and near exterior walls.

Snow removal

  • Do not park in the street, so plows can clear the full road. Narrow streets are the biggest problem. Ordinance 11-20-050.
  • It is unlawful to place or cast any substance, including snow cleared from walks and private driveways, onto a city street. Ordinance 4-5-160C.
  • Snow and ice must be removed from the sidewalk within 24 hours after each snowstorm ends. Violators are subject to a fine.
  • Public Works asks drivers to slow down, use caution, and help others while commuting this winter.
  • If you store large quantities of salt or de-icing product outside, keep it in a covered container.
