Public Works Update, February 2025: Fix-It Requests and Stormwater Runoff

In short

Public Works asks residents to call the office at 801-825-7235 first for water, sewer, street, and sidewalk problems rather than posting on social media. Requests can also be submitted online or through the Syracuse City mobile app, and the same phone number reaches an on-call employee after hours. The issue also explains stormwater runoff: anything that washes off lawns, driveways, and streets goes into storm drains untreated and ends up in local streams, rivers, and lakes.

Everything else

  • Public Works handles water, stormwater, sewer, land drains, streets, street signs, streetlamps, and pothole and sidewalk repairs.
  • The fastest way to get a Public Works concern answered is to call the office at 801-825-7235. Online fix-it requests can be filed on the city website or in the Syracuse City mobile app.
  • After-hours emergencies needing immediate Public Works attention: call 801-825-7235, which routes directly to a Public Works employee.
  • Stormwater runoff picks up pet waste, fertilizer, engine oil, and other pollutants and carries them into local waterways with no filtering or treatment.
  • Soil counts as a pollutant too: excess sediment clouds waterways and, once it settles, can clog pipes and cause flooding.
  • The storm drain system is separate from the sanitary sewer your house connects to, where wastewater goes to a treatment plant before returning to waterways.
  • The city asks residents to keep pollutants out of storm drains, noting runoff is a major and hard to regulate cause of water pollution nationally.
