Public Works Update, March 2025: Protect Our Water System

In short

Public Works asks residents to sweep leaves, dirt, and debris out of curbs and gutters before the rainy season so storm drains stay clear, and to keep fertilizer off streets and gutters. Anyone who is not a Syracuse City employee using or accessing a fire hydrant should be reported to Public Works at 801-825-7235. Public Works also accepts excess road salt for disposal at no charge.

Everything else

Storm drains and fertilizer

  • Sweep leaves, dirt, and debris from your curb and gutter before the rain arrives so storm drains stay clear, then put the debris in your garbage can.
  • Follow fertilizer instructions and avoid spilling product onto streets or into gutters. If it gets there, sweep it up and throw it away.

Fire hydrants

  • Report anyone other than a Syracuse City employee using or accessing a fire hydrant by calling Public Works at 801-825-7235. The city says unauthorized use can jeopardize the water system.

Road salt

  • Public Works accepts excess road salt for disposal at no charge. Call 801-825-7235 during business hours, Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
