Mayor's Message, April 2025: LDS Temple Opening in Syracuse

In short

Mayor Dave Maughan writes in April to give residents early notice about May. The newly finished Syracuse Utah LDS Temple will hold a public open house for the entire month of May 2025, and the city estimates 200,000 to 300,000 visitors. The open house is open to everyone regardless of faith and ends when the temple is dedicated on June 8, 2025. Residents may see higher traffic on 2500 South during the open house.

Dates and deadlines

  • All of May 2025: temple open house, open to the public.
  • June 8, 2025: the temple is dedicated, which ends the open house.

Everything else

  • The city estimates 200,000 to 300,000 visitors will come to Syracuse for the open house.
  • Traffic on 2500 South may be higher during the open house. The mayor writes that once a temple is open, its traffic is usually spread out enough that it is not considered a high impact on the community.
  • After the dedication, the temple grounds will be open to all. The mayor notes there is no restriction on religious institutions in any city zone in Syracuse.
  • The mayor writes that open houses can help people of different faiths find common ground, and that nationwide statistics show higher property values and lower crime rates near a temple or other house of worship.
  • The mayor writes that visitors are expected to eat at local restaurants, buy gas, and visit the museum or city parks, and that this is outside revenue for Syracuse businesses.
  • The mayor asks residents to prepare in April for extra visitors, to be patient with traffic, and to welcome people visiting the city.
