Public Works Update, July 2025: Cross Connections, Storm Water, Tree Trimming, Road Construction

In short

Connecting a sprinkler system to the city’s culinary (drinking) water supply is illegal, and the city says a violation could force a shutdown of the secondary water system for every resident. Public Works also asks residents to keep soap, fluids, and yard debris out of storm drains, since that water is not treated before it reaches rivers and lakes. Trees must be trimmed to seven feet above sidewalks and 13.5 feet above the street. The six-way roundabout will see daytime closures this summer for about six to eight weeks.

Everything else

  • Water cross connections: Connecting a sprinkler system to the culinary water supply is illegal and contaminates the whole drinking water system. If a violation is found, the city may have to shut down the secondary water system citywide, and violators will be prosecuted. Sprinkler systems should be connected to secondary water only. If you suspect a cross connection or are unsure, call Public Works at 801-825-7235 or submit a fix-it request. Sources: Page 1
  • Storm water: Water that enters a storm drain is not treated before it reaches rivers, lakes, and natural habitats. Wash vehicles at a commercial car wash or on the lawn, keep oils and coolants contained, wipe up spills right away, and do not rinse leaves, soap, or dirt into the gutter. Sources: Page 1
  • Tree trimming: All trees must be pruned so branches hang no lower than seven feet above sidewalks and 13.5 feet above the street, and kept clear of street signs and streetlamps. When planting, avoid sidewalk and gutter edges, keep trees back from corners for driver visibility, and stay away from buried sewer lines. Details are in City Code 10.30.070. Sources: Page 2
  • Road construction: The six-way roundabout will have daytime closures this summer for about six to eight weeks for underground utility work, with exact dates announced later. Residents can sign up for construction updates on the city website. Sources: Page 2
