Public Works Update, October 2025: Secondary Water, Cross Connections, & Utility Lids

In short

Secondary water is shut off on October 10, 2025, so this is the time to drain and winterize sprinkler systems before freezing weather. Public Works warns that a cross connection between culinary and secondary lines carries a fine of $1,000 per incident. Several summer road projects are still unfinished, and the department asks drivers to plan extra time for detours.

Everything else

Water quality

  • Improper changes to home piping can create a cross connection that affects both water availability and water quality. Public Works asks residents not to link culinary water with sprinkler systems. Sources: Page 1
  • An unprotected garden hose sitting in a puddle, or an unprotected lawn sprinkler used after fertilizing, also counts as a cross connection. Sources: Page 1
  • A cross connection found between culinary and secondary lines can bring a fine of $1,000 per incident. See City Code 4.15.450, or call Public Works for more information. Sources: Page 1

Utilities

  • Keep lawn and plants trimmed back so utility lids stay visible. Crews need to find them quickly in an emergency, such as shutting off a valve to protect a home. Sources: Page 2

Storm water and hazardous waste

  • Cover, contain, and store cleaners, pesticides, fuel, oil, fertilizer, paint, and salt before the weather changes, so they do not reach storm drains. Keep containers closed, off the ground, protected from the elements, and clearly labeled. Sources: Page 2
  • Household hazardous waste and electronic waste can be dropped off at the Wasatch Integrated Waste facility. Sources: Page 2

Roads

  • Summer road projects are not finished yet. Watch for construction areas, plan extra time to detour, and check the weekly construction updates on the city page. Sources: Page 2
