In short
The February Public Works update covers two things: how to get something fixed, and why what runs off your yard matters. Call 801-825-7235, use the Fix-It Request form on the city website, or use the Syracuse City app. The same number handles after-hours emergencies. The department also explains that water running off lawns, driveways, and streets goes into streams and lakes untreated.
Everything else
- Public Works handles water, storm drains, streets, street signs, and pothole repairs.
- To report a problem: call 801-825-7235, submit the Fix-It Request form on the city website, or use the Syracuse City app.
- After-hours emergencies use the same number, 801-825-7235, and are routed to an on-call Public Works employee.
- The city says posting on social media is slower than submitting a request directly.
- Stormwater runoff carries pet waste, fertilizer, engine oil, and soil into streams, rivers, and lakes with no filtering or treatment. Excess sediment clouds waterways and can clog pipes, which can cause flooding.
- Storm drains are separate from the sanitary sewer system. Household wastewater is treated before release; stormwater is not.
- What residents can do: pick up litter and pet waste, avoid overusing fertilizers, and keep oil and chemicals off driveways.
