In short
Mayor Dave Maughan is adding a Freedom Run Relay to Syracuse Heritage Days this year, tied to the America 250 celebrations. It is a timed race for teams of five people of any age, run over five legs, on the evening of Friday, June 19. Registration is at the Community Center’s Recreation Desk or on the city website, with a $10 team entry fee. The fee goes toward a fundraiser for a city memorial honoring military veterans, which the mayor says he will announce once details are set.
Dates and deadlines
- June 19 (Friday evening): Freedom Run Relay at Syracuse Heritage Days.
Everything else
- The race has five legs: a 50-meter dash, a 50-meter potato-sack hop, a three-legged race for two people, three people Hula Hooping at the same time, and two people finishing as a human wheelbarrow. Three legs need more than one person, so teams of five will run more than one leg.
- Teams can be family, friends, neighbors, or any mix of five people, and a person may be on more than one team.
- The mayor writes that he will personally create a special trophy if a team from each local school signs up, and another special trophy for the top church group.
- The race is timed because not everyone can race at once. Register in person at the Community Center’s Recreation Desk or on the city website.
- There are prizes for top teams, and everyone who participates gets a commemorative token.
- The $10 team entry fee goes toward a heritage fundraiser for a city project memorial honoring military veterans. The mayor writes that the project will happen later and that he will share more next month.
- The mayor frames the relay as a spectator event too, and says it adds to the traditional Friday night Heritage Days events.
