City Newsletter: October 2026

In short

Utility customers who still get a mailed bill had until October 1 to go paperless before a $2.00 monthly paper statement fee starts in November. October is packed with Halloween events, most of them free: the Pumpkin Walk October 22 to 24, Night at the Museum October 23, and two contests with mid-month registration deadlines. The CHaRM hard-to-recycle drop-off is October 17 at the Park and Ride, and Drug Take Back Day is October 24 at Walmart. Secondary water is shut off for the season, so sprinkler systems need to be winterized.

Everything else

Utility billing

  • Starting in November, utility customers who receive a mailed paper bill will be charged $2.00 a month to cover processing, printing, and mailing. Customers enrolled in paperless billing through XPress Bill Pay are not charged.

City government

  • The mayor writes that a city’s reputation is not fixed by one moment or one era, noting that Syracuse has been known as a farming community, the home of RC Willey, and a fast-growing northern Utah suburb, and that residents shape that reputation by how they view and represent where they live. Read the full message
  • The city posted a summary of the actions taken at the September 8, 2026 council business meeting. City Council update
  • The monthly city government term is “infrastructure”: the physical systems a community runs on, including roads, sidewalks, water, sewer, storm drains, public buildings, parks, and trails. The city notes this is why road repairs, park upgrades, and utility work are planned years ahead and funded through specific budgets or grants.
  • Syracuse City is hiring; openings are posted on the city’s job site.
  • The employee spotlight is on Justice Court Clerk Delicia Cando, who has been with the city more than two years and oversees daily operations of the Justice Court.

Water and public works

  • Secondary water is shut off for the season. Public Works advises blowing out sprinkler lines so no water is left in the pipes to freeze and break, and says fall is a good time to install a personal secondary shut-off valve so you can turn off your own secondary water without a city worker. The full update also covers yard cleanup and cross connections. Read the Public Works update
  • Weber Basin’s water tip: close your irrigation water valve and winterize sprinklers now, since a hard freeze will break pipes that still hold water.

Safety

  • For Fire Prevention Week, the fire department focused on lithium-ion batteries: follow the manufacturer’s charging guidelines, use only the charger and cable that came with the device, do not charge on beds, couches, or under pillows, and do not overcharge. Batteries can be recycled at the CHaRM event or at the Household Hazardous Waste facility at the Davis Landfill.
  • A member of the city’s Disaster Preparedness Committee listed 20 ways to get a house ready for winter, including draining and storing hoses, covering spigots, tuning up the snowblower and furnace, checking door and window seals, cleaning gutters after the leaves fall, doing a vehicle check, and arranging snow removal ahead of time.

Recreation

  • Community Center fall hours: Monday through Thursday 6 AM to 9 PM, Friday 6 AM to 8 PM, Saturday 8 AM to 4 PM, closed Sunday.
  • Fitness classes: Step It Up at 9 AM Mondays and Fridays, Pump it Up (resistance training, hand weights and balls provided, bring your own mat) at 9 AM Tuesdays. All skill levels.
  • Recurring senior activities continue: Think Tuesday games on Tuesdays, and pickleball and yoga on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • Register for recreation programs through the city catalog.
  • The city keeps a running list of local Halloween activities on its Scarycuse Community Events page.
